Refractory magnesite casting material used to clad industrial furnaces is produced by mixing the magnesite grains with synthetic SiO2 products which have been pretreated to give them hydrophobic properties. The SiO2 coats the magnesite particles and prevents them hydrating. ADVANTAGE - By preventing hydration, the magnesite does not lose its refractory properties and the method avoids the emission of toxic gases such as SO2 which is given off in the prior art pretreatment of magnesite.
