Transplant capsule comprising tissue or cells and oxygen carriers - to introduce e.g. insulin producing cells into human body; has long life span owing to internal oxygen supply
A means for the introducing biologically active cells or tissues that form hormones or other effective agents into the human body is independent of the blood supply and comprises a closed vessel. The vessel is at least partially formed by a membrane or a capsule of selective permeability so that body fluids can permeate whilst antibodies and immune cells are excluded and in its interior contains haemoglobin that can be oxygenised or another oxygen carrier, such as fluorocarbon derivs., which surround the cells or the tissue. Also claimed is the means above contg. in its interior between the cells and the tissue scavenger substances that degrade or support the degradation of oxygen radicals and/or gas fumes. It was found that captive haemoglobin that can be oxygenised (not met haemoglobin) can transport oxygen thereby increasing the life span. Alternatively, other oxygen carriers such as fluorocarbon derivs. can be used. USE/ADVANTAGE - The new means are used as transplants, e.g. in diabetes mellitus. The transplants show a higher life span of the cells or tissues owing to its oxygen supply inside.
