An undesirable gaseous or fine particulate substance runs together with admixed substances which influence plasmachemical reactions through a section to which dielectrically inhibited ("silent") discharges are applied. According to the invention all process parameters of the plasmachemical reactions are regulated in such a way that the desired cleavage of the pollutants is maximized and the occurrence of undesirable reactions, in particular ozone generation, is minimized. In a device suitable for carrying out this process, a guiding path (5) for the pollutants, including inlets (6, 7) for the admixed substances, is associated with an electrode arrangement (4), and means (3, 30-35) are provided for regulating the electric power and for ensuring a defined temperature of the pollutants to be processed.
