The corneal treatment appts includes a pilot laser (3) which is used to align the optical axis (OA) of the eye with the centre line (SM) of the main laser beam (5) in a desired position, where the eye is imaged by a video camera (11). Any spatial deviation from the desired position is monitored by an image memory (12) and comparator (15). A shifting device (17) responsive to the result of the comparison either shuts off the main laser (7) or adjusts the zoom lens system (8,9) to correct the size and position of the corneal area irradiated with its beam (5). ADVANTAGE - Only portion of cornea requiring treatment for correction of defective vision is exposed to laser beam.
