Material contg. iron oxide and/or non-ferrous heavy metal cpds. are treated in a furnace by heating to red heat using a pulsed reducing flame and hydrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon gases, mixtures of at least two of these. The material is heated by direct contact with the flame. Carbon dust or lignite dust with powdered alkalis are pref. added to the pulsed flame. The gases and aerosol gases are pulsed through fine porous material contg. iron before leaving the furnace. USE/ADVANTAGE - Working-up of ores, waste material from various processes, etc. High temps. are achieved and the pulsed effect ensures the dust-like material remains in close contact with the gases. Any toxic gases contg. aromatic halogen cpds. are destroyed when in contact with hot iron.
