A measuring unit determines the height (h) of the storage material arranged respectively on the storage surfaces of the storage goods carriers. A computer controls the feed and removal system, which has a memory storage for storing the components (DELTA H) of the stowage space height (H) which corresponds respectively to the occupied and/or free storage places. The free components available at the stowage space height are compared with the height (h) of the storage material, to prevent storage of goods in a storage place of too small height (DELTA H). The width (b) of the storage surfaces of the storage goods carrier (10) is smaller than the smallest distance (B) between the supporting rails (11;12) respectively lying opposite of each pair of supporting rails. The computer controls the feed and removal unit (8), such that the respective carrier (10) is so guided in the shelving that the component (DELTA H) of the stowage space height (H) claimed for the housing of the storage goods (9) in the shelving, satisfies as far as possible the condition: DELTA H = (t + 1) X A t X A, in which t is the largest whole number component of A in h. ADVANTAGE - Stores in simple manner also with goods strongly differing in height.
