A measuring unit determines the height (h) of the storage material arranged respectively on the storage surfaces of the storage goods carriers. The computer controls the feed and removal unit (8), such that the respective carrier (10) is so guided in the shelving that the component (DELTA H) of the stowage space height (H) claimed for the housing of the storage goods (9) in the shelving, satisfies as far as possible the condition: DELTA H = (t + 1) X A t X A, in which t is the largest whole number component of A in h.
