A process for mfg. a felt of a great width with longitudinally oriented fibres out of a staple fibre web of a comparatively small width is new. The web is fed continuously in its longitudinal direction and the staple fibres are combed out of the web on a line that runs diagonally to the feed direction. The combing takes place in a direction vertical to the aforementioned line. In the transport area located upstream of the line, the nonwoven is secured against a lateral drawing away at least directly in front of the line. The web, which as been widened and realigned, is needled in its full width simultaneously. n installation for carrying out the process has a rotating comber (8) between the card (1) and the needle machine (12). The comber (8) has a working width corresponding to the needle machine (12). The card (1) is positioned in relation to the comber (8) in such a way that a web runs to the comber (8) diagonally to the drawing-in and working direction of the comber (8). A transport unit (7) is located between the card (1) and the comber (8) and has several parallel belts (13, 15) of different lengths. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is suitable for paper machine felt production. The needle head need not be moved and wide felts of any required length can be produced that are not necessarily tube felts.
