Aq. coating compsns. (I) comprise aq. solns. of mono-organosilanolates (II) and/or their condensation prods. formed by elimination of water as aq. binder (III), metal powder (IV), opt. SiO2 with a BET surface area of min. 50 m2/g, opt. hydrophobised, and opt. water. The aq. binder (III) is claimed per se. (I) contain 100 (wt.) pts. (III), 10-1500 pts. (IV), 0-5 pts. SiO2 and 0-300 pts.water. (II) are of the formula RSi(OM)m(OH)3-m; R = monovalent (substd.) 1-8C hydrocarbyl gp(s).; M = an alkali metal or ammonium cation; m = 0.1-3. (III) contains 10-70% (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - (III) is esp. useful with Zn dust for corrosion-inhibiting coatings and primers, e.g. for tankers, bridges, drilling rigs, cranes, furnaces, refineries, i.c. engines, electric motors and exhaust plant. Coatings contg. (III) and Zn dust give good protection against corrosion, esp. by saline media, and have good resistance to solvents and water. They are resistant to temps. up to 420 deg.C or, when pigmented with Al, up to 500-600 deg.C.
