In a new procedure for de-contaminating oxygen-containing gases, the gas is treated with ozone as well as with UV-light. Also claimed is an appts. for carrying out the procedure, having the following features: (a) a double-walled tube (1) made of a dielectric material whose outer wall contains an exterior electrode (6) and whose inner wall (5) is transparent to UV-light; (b) an electrode arrangement (8) inside this tube, with a first longitudinal section (O) separated by a gap from the tube wall and a second longitudinal section (U) adjacent to the tube wall; (c) the gas passes through the internal space of the double-walled tube; (d) the annular space between the walls of the tube is filled with a gas which gives off UV-light when an electrical discharge takes place; and (e) a source of alternating voltage (10) is connected between the outer electrode (6) and the electrode arrangement (8) in order to supply the discharge current. The ozone is produced by an electrical discharge in gas stream, and is immediately followed by the application of UV-light. The electrode arrangement (8) is preferably spiral in shape or in the form of a grid or network. The first longitudinal section of this electrode may consist of a single straight wire (8a), and the second of spiral wire coil. The electrode arrangement is shaped so as to promote turbulence in the gas stream. USE/ADVANTAGE - For removing dangerous contaminants from oxygen-containing gases. The advantages of ozone treatment and of UV-light treatment are combined in a single treatment procedure.
