The tool (14) is moved between a spindle stock and a workpiece table. The relative position of the spindle stock to a reference point is measured by a displacement measurement system. The tool is moved in the direction of one of its coordinates to an optical measurement plane perpendicular to these coordinates. The measurement system produces a signal when the tool enters the plane, and the instantaneous spindle stock position is measured. The tool dimensions are then derived from the measured position and the relative position of the measurement plane to the reference point.
