The mattress includes an uppermost layer (1) which is mfd. of fabric, sheep's wool or plastic and covers a sheet of rubber, felt or foam or an insulating sheet (2), two similar sheets (3,4) incorporating a field coil system (6-9) and a conductive metallic grid (10) respectively, and an underlayer (5) similar to the uppermost layer. A central set of coils (6) for prodn. of a strong magnetic field is surrounded by a weak-field outer winding (7). The grid has leads (11,12) for connection to a coverlet and earth respectively. USE/ADVANTAGE - For long-term therapy using progressively less conc. magnetic fields. Treatment can begin with intense field, from the centre of the mattress, which is gradually reduced and distributed.
