Process for controlling the microbial purificn. of contaminated material comprises airing the material with an oxygen-contg. gas at the start of the purificn. process at least, then controlling contaminant degradation throughout the entire process, and then when a stagnation in degradation occurs prior to a pre-determined result, the material is analysed to see whether nitrite, nitrate or anaerobic centres are present. If nitrite and nitrate are present at a concn. greater than a pre-determined value, then the material is aired, while if anaerobic centres are present then an electron acceptor other than oxygen is added to the material. USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful for pit sanitation (esp. for regeneration pits) of contaminated materials, e.g. soil from industrial or waste disposal sites. Contaminant degradation is prevented from stagnation, allowing degradation of hydrocarbons, and high nitrate levels are prevented.
