The rotor (2) is conveyed to an assembly station and secured. The formed coils (1) are supplied to the rotor. Each one has a section inserted into a groove on the rotor. The rotor is rotated by a predetermined amount and a further coil supplied. The process is repeated until all the grooves are occupied with lower layers. The rotor is moved to a subsequent assembly station where the projecting sections of the coils for upper layers are aligned and bent as a whole. Finally the projecting section of a coil is inserted into the associated groove. The rotor is rotated by a predetermined amount then a further coil section inserted into the associated groove until all the grooves are occupied with upper layers. ADVANTAGE - Is less time, labour and cost intensive.
