An adaptor ring (1) has three jaws (4) which are expanded against the outer wall (5) of an annular recess (6) previously cut into the work surface by an end cutting tool with a centre point. Supporting the ring in the vicinity of the jaws are three feet (2) which are sharpened to bite into the work surface. One of the jaws is radially slidable through a guideway (17) by actuation of a hand lever (8) which turns a threaded shaft (9) with an eccentric collar (12) on the end. The collar forces the jaw outwards, exerting both a radial clamping force and an axial force pulling the adaptor ring hard onto the work surface.
