A high capacity accumulator has positive (2) and negative (3) electrode plates and separators (4). Free spaces are created i) between the plates (2,3) and the housing cover (11), ii) between the side edges of the plates (2,3) and the housing walls and iii) between the plates (2,3) and the base. At the top of the accumulator, in the upright position is a filler opening (21) and a safety valve (12). Both sets of plates (2,3) are connected via terminal bridges (7,8) to terminals extending out of the housing cover (11). The electrolyte is a thixotropic gel which covers the terminal bridges (7,8). Absorbent pads (10,22) collect fluid and gaseous electrolyte when the accumulator lies on one sides and give it up according to the condition of the accumulator. The pads (10,22) are located either in the free area above the plates (2,3) or at the side of the plates (2,3). Pads (10,22) comprise a porous fleece mfd. in glass, mineral or plastic fibres. USE/ADVANTAGE - For portable electrical supply. Can be used in horizontal and vertical positions without requiring two different designs and the positive or negative terminal can be the top.
