A laser diode or other pump source pumps, via a glass fibre (2), a crystal (3), which can be e.g. Nd:MgO:LiNbO3, which is cut and orientated in the so-called X- and y-cut. The laser mirrors (4, 5) are monolithic and steamed on to the corresp. crystalline surfaces. While the strongest portion of the laser radiation is available at the output, the uncoupled portion of the radiation with less intensity at the other end of the crystal is changed over with a dichroitic mirror (9) and split up by a polarisation divider (10) in two polarisation directions. The one of the two beams is turned through 90 deg. in its polarisation by means of a lambda-2 plate (6) so that both polarisations can be coupled in parallel into a Y-shaped glass fibre branch (7).
