The digital signals from at least one camera for image evaluation directed at the incident region are digitised. Two successive images are subtracted and several difference images are accumulated. Two vertical lines which stand out in the images because of their grey values are defined as boundary lines (23a,23b) of the material flow (23) and are used to define the line (24) of material descent. The horizontal region with low grey values and uniform grey value distribution coinciding with the descent line is defined as the incident region (26). USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for use in lignite mining. Material incident region is measured automatically and very precisely.
