Barrier medium seal comprising annular flanges for rotary kiln - ensuring complete sealing against combustion gas emission useful for special waste incineration

A barrier medium seal, for sealing the rotary drum of a rotary kiln against stationary end charging and discharging chambers, consists of an annular sealing flange on each end of the drum, a sealing ring which is fixed between flanges, comprises closable individual sections and is seated on the radial peripheral sealing flange of the drum, and barrier medium supply lines for the individual sealing sections. The novelty is that (a) each individual section (1a,b) of the sealing ring (1) has a circumferential groove (2), a bore (3) and a sleeve with one closed end for the barrier medium connection (4) and can slide radially between front (8) and back (9) flanges; (b) a deformable pneumatic sealing element (5) for a pressure medium is fitted over the sealing ring between the front and back flanges (8,9); and (c) a closure flange (7) is located above the sealing element (5). USE/ADVANTAGE - The kiln is used e.g. for incineration of special waste. The seal ensures complete sealing against combustion gas emission or air entry when elevated pressure or reduced pressure, respectively, exist in the reaction space and allows uniform closing of the sealing sections about the periphery of the kiln drum.
