The accident data recorder detects and evaluates acceleration signals to indicate an accident situation dependent on their amplitude and duration, with the operating condition of the engine interrogated and recorded. The accident data recording device is held in an active condition with an increased sensitivity level, when the vehicle engine is switched off-over a timed interval. Pref. the operating condition of the vehicle engine is detected by interrogating the switch position of the engine ignition switch, the initiation of the increased sensitivity level using temporarily delayed after the engine is switched off.
