Prodn. of components for osteosynthesis, esp. screws or pins for fixing bone fragments - where plastic material undergoes two pressing operations, during second of which material is extended so that reinforcing molecular chains are formed
A new procedure for producing components of osteosynthesis from a material which can be connected by resorption to the human or animal metabolism and is reinforced by molecular chains is characterised by the following stages: performing the component (4) by pressing in a first mould (2), prodn. of self-reinforcing molecular chains by means of a second pressing operation (6) in which the relation between the weighted dimensions in one direction and the weighted dimensions in a direction perpendicular to this is chosen in accordance with the requirements of the latter direction. USE/ADVANTAGE - For producing elements such as screws or pins for use in osteosynthesis, repairing of fractures etc. The procedure is simple and effective and produces components of a wide range of shapes, and in particular elongated shapes. Little or no reduction in the molecular weight of the raw material takes place, so that the mechanical properties of the components are greatly improved, their general properties make them suitable for fixing bone fragments and they are highly resistant to mechanical and bending forces.
