A planetary drive for a multi-screw extruder comprises: (i) a cylindrical housing (6) with inner teeth (1); (ii) a sun wheel (2) formed by teeth on part of a central shaft; (iii) main planetary wheels (3) on a circle, at a distance from each other, the sun wheel (2) and the inner housing teeth (1) and formed by toothed areas of the screws (9); (iv) inner intermediate planetary wheels (4) between the sunwheel (2) and the main planetary wheels (3) and meshing with them; (v) outer intermediate planetary wheels (5) between the main planetary wheels (3) and the housing inner teeth (1) and meshing with them. A multi-screw extruder using the claimed planetary drive is used for high viscosity materials and comprises a melt inlet (10), a processing chamber (12) with screws (9) in a circle around a central shaft (8) and a melt output section (13). A process using the extruder is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - For multi-screw extruders used to process high viscosity materials. Sealing problems in the processing chamber are reduced and the processed materials are conveyed to all parts without entering dead spots.
