The distance meter uses the triangulation method. A source sends a light beam to an object and a light collector focuses reflected light onto a position detector (24) which determines the position of the incident beam. The collector selectively focusses the reflected light onto a near region detection section or onto a far region detection section. The separate and mutually independent near and far region sections (24a,24c;24b,24d) are both formed on the position detector. USE/ADVANTAGE - For measuring distance from object to distance meter. Simple arrangement measures distance very accurately and over wide range.
