The area, spatial, time and/or weather state dependent emission characteristic of the odour source is measured over a measurement period. The true odour loading at the measurement point is evaluated by use of a tracer gas released in known concentration at the emission point and measured at the measurement point. In the case of a large area source the tracer gas is released from emission probes at several points over the surface of the source, pref. distributed in a grid pattern. The release of the tracer gas is controlled according to an odour emission model. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for measuring odour emissions at distance from odour source such as waste tip or sewer. Tracer method is used in place of conventional analytical and olfactometric methods to achieve truly objective measurements.
