The AC alternator (6) of a road vehicle system is coupled to the battery (9) with the charge process controlled by a regulator (10). The regulator has a buffer memory (1), a pulse-width modulator signal generator (2), voltage difference circuit (3), current measurement stage (4), solid state power switch (51) and drive circuit (52). A further solid state switching unit (55) controls the current through a charge indicator bulb (66). The circuit operates to provide PWM control of the current through the field-winding (61) of the alternator, with the switching stage (51) controlling the voltage level of the battery. ADVANTAGE - Simple construction requiring limited cost.
