An appts. to test a wound bobbin (P), and check the surface for projecting yarn ends, has a light source (11) which directs a laser beam (Lo) towards and over the surface (10) of the bobbin (P). The reflected laser beam (LR) is received (12). A unit registers the presence of a projecting yarn end (18), and the like, according to the output signal from the light sensor (12).$ Pref. the bobbin (P) is rotated (14) while the laser beam (Lo) from the light source (11) is directed at the surface (10) under scrutiny. The light sensor (12) is positioned to receive the reflected beam (LR) from the surface (10). The light source (11) is placed above and outside the surface (10) of the bobbin (P) and radially on the direction of the bobbin (P) centre to direct a laser beam (Lo) to a point near the centre of the end surface (10) of the bobbin (P), without striking the bobbin sleeve (B). The light sensor (12) is placed next to the light source (11).$ USE/ADVANTAGE - The system is for checking wound bobbins, to register the presence of projections from the wound surface as projecting yarn ends, fibre waste and the like. The action monitors the surfaces of the bobbins, optically, without manual checking.
