The testing device has a transmitter (1,3,6) coupled to a transmitter head (9) for providing a pulsed signal of variable amplitude. The signal is reflected at a boundary surface, received and subjected to frequency modulation.The separated base frequency amplitudes provided by the demodulator are summed with one another and with a further harmonic frequency component of the frequency modulated measuring signal obtd. from the boundary surface via a summator (26) providing the output signal of the testing device.
