The instrument includes a device (21) for detecting the magnetic field with a detection section (22) deployed to form an observation plane and contg. detection blocks, each contg. at least three detection planes. Each plane contains a magnetic sensor (24), e.g. a superconducting quantum interference detector (SQUID), with different directions w.r.t. the sensor planes. An evaluation device (45) evaluates in three-dimensions the intensity of a further magnetic field at a given evaluation position on the basis of the detected value of the magnetic field. A data detection device forms data concerning the magnetic source on the basis of the detected intensity of the further field. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for measuring magnetic source in form of dipoles inside human body. Allows highly sensitive and accurate measurement of magnetic source with low computer capacity and computing time.
