Use of aq. media for the reducing stage of the permanent shaping of keratin fibres, esp. human hair, the reducing agent is a heterocyclic thiol of formula X-A-SM (I). X is heterocyclic gp. contg. at least 1 C, and 1-4 N and/or 1-2 O, and opt. substd. with OH, halogen, oxo, COOH, or 1-4C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl gps.; A is 1-4C alkylene gp.; M is H, alkali(ne earth), NH4 where 1 or more H may be replaced by 1-4C (hydroxy)alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - Operation of the redn. stage of permanent shaping of keratin fibres, using (I) as reducing agent. Good results were obtd. without the unpleasant smell of mercaptans.
