The magnetic disc system for video recording and playback receives an input signal (Y+S) by a separating stage (10) to extract synchronising data (S). This is received by a burst signal generator (20) that produces an output gated through a burst signal gating stage (30) to be added to the original signal (35). The gating stage uses the output of a clock generator (40). The playback process processes (90) the signal and feeds it to a separator stage (100). Here the signal is used by a phase locked loop (120) that uses the modified video signal.
