The gas laser oscillator has a discharge tube (1) coupled to a gas circulation system (10). The gas within the tube is excited by radio waves or microwaves. A reflector (6) is provided at one end of the tube and a partial reflector (7) at its opposite end. The gas is fed through a gas flow rectifier (4) at each end of the tube for imparting a velocity vector having a component radial to a transversal cross-section plane perpendicular to the tube axis. The component (Vr) in the radial direction is given by: Vr greater than a/Trn, where a is the internal diameter of the discharge tube, and Trn is the natural relaxation time of the excitation level of the laser medium. USE/ADVANTAGE - For providing high power laser beam used for machining hard metals and ceramics. Good beam distribution and mode. Electrode is simply shaped.
