The device reflects the output from an optical transmitter (10) from the surface of the object to be received (11) for transmission to a windowing comparator (15). This has two stages comparing the input with a pair of limit values (U1,U2). The greater or less than signals are provided as input to a micro-controller (17) with an AND-gate (16) used for actuation. Within the micro-controller a cycle is performed in which counting takes place until a reference is reached. The input voltage range is dependent upon the number of pulses counted. USE/ADVANTAGE - Allows input voltage range to be varied.
