Induction hardening process for universal or Kardan joint crosspieces, with simultaneous overall surface hardening of pin and saddle areas. The carbon steel crosspiece (1) is inductively heated over its whole surface area to transition temperature and subsequently quenched in a water based medium by rotation of the crosspiece (1) about an axis (5') through the intersection (11) of the pin centre lines (4) in the centre (10) of a toroidal medium frequency alternating field (9). The toroidal field is generated by a ring induction coil (7) and its axis (8) is inclined 30 to 60 deg. to the rotation axis (5') of the crosspiece and approximately concentric with the centre point (11) of the crosspiece.Process equipment is also claimed.The axis of the toroidal field (9) produced by the ring induction coil (7) is inclined 30 to 60 deg., pref. about 45 deg., to the rotation axis (5') of the crosspiece. The alternating field (9) has a frequency of about 10 kHz +/- 10%.
