The rotary drive has a rotor (17) which is integral with the machine tool spindle (1) or with a rotary sleeve (47) fitted to the latter and a coaxial stator (19) wound with a field winding (19c), for magnetising the rotor in a given direction and an armature winding (196) for providing the rotation force for the rotor. Pref. the machine tool spindle is axially movable relative to the rotor, the latter having an axial length which corresponds to the displacement path of the spindle. ADVANTAGE - Short axial length, simplicity, stability and easy fitting and removal.
