A solid pulverulent charge of nickel or of one of the transition metals of columns III-A to V-A of the Periodic Table is dispersed in a mother liquid made of pure aluminium or of an aluminium alloy, this being done until virtually complete dissolution, after which solidification is carried out. A composite is thus obtained which is reinforced with oriented nickel aluminide fibres which have formed in situ during the operation. IMAGE
