Prodn. of resistance welding arms with coatings for friction and shock protection - comprises deposition of electrical insulating material on copper@ arm and shock resistance layer on insulating layer
A layer of electrical insulating material (13), deposited on an arm (10) made from Cu or Cu alloy; and a layer of material to protect against friction and shock (20,21) is deposited on the electrical insulating layer (13). The layer of insulating material (13) may be a material such as a ceramic or an epoxy resin. The material in the shock resistance layer (20) is nickel and the layer of friction resistance material (21) is chromium. The intermediate conducting layer may be copper, bronze, silver or gold. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used for the prodn. of the welding arms used for resistance welding operations for the assembly of metal sheet, notably in the automobile industry. It can also be used to confer similar protection for other similar applications. It provides protection against the risks of shunting, friction and shock during the welding operation thus ensuring that the quality of welding is maintained constant at all times.
