The N channel probe (1) includes a series of M transducers, and can operate in two modes. In a normal mode, N transducers are selected and are associated with N channels. In a zoom mode N micro detectors of M/N transducers joined in parallel are grouped and each is associated with a channel. In a variant, two series of micro detectors each having a different number of transducers are formed. The first series (Mce-Mce6) for transmission and the second series (Mcr-Mcr4) for reception, so as to attenuate the effects of image lobes. USE/ADVANTAGE - Produces fine resolution whilst conserving same number of channels, and nullifies effects of image lobes.
