Prodn. of punch (20) and die (10) tooling, for sheet metal stamping, made from an epoxy resin cement base using a master model of the final form, consists of (a) coating the master with wax twice the sheet thickness; (b) forming by pouring a sub-die of epoxy resin in a metal caisson; (c) coating the sub-die with wax three times the sheet thickness; (d) forming a sub-punch in a metal caisson by pouring epoxy resin; (e) removing the wax coating; (f) using the sub punch and die stamp to form a metal punch envelope; (g) welding the punch envelope (15) over the sub-punch metal caisson to form the punch; (h) stamping two metal die envelopes (23, 25) using the punch and sub-die; and (i) using the two envelopes (25, 35) to form the centre (25) and outer (35) dies by welding over the sub-dies to the metal caisson. USE/ADVANTAGE - Stamping tooling for small and medium batches, e.g. 500-1000 parts, partic. metal coachwork parts. Simple means of production of tooling from a master giving longer life than straight resin tooling, and easy replacement of metal surfaces.
