The monitoring procedure involves using an acquisition system (6,7,11) delivering a signal (TS) representative of the cutting force of the tool, and a reference generator (TC). A data processor (18) is connected to the acquisition and generation circuits. In its first mode the processor delivers regulation signals derived from the difference between reference and acquisition data. In its second mode the processor monitors anomalies in the machining. The processor passes between the two states when predetermined conditions arise. ADVANTAGE - Provides earlier and reliable detection of approaching failure of cutting tool.
