Device for cooling external wall of metallurgical vessel - and its particular application to a steel-making converter

A device is claimed for cooling the external wall (3) of a metallurgical vessel (2) subjected to high temperatures, surrounded at least partially by an element (4) forming a thermal screen and in which one internal wall (4a) is arranged with respect to the outer wall (3) of the vessel (2). The two walls (3, 4a) are essentially parallel and situated at a small distance from each other. The device comprises:- a system (10) for feeding a gaseous cooling fluid; a system (12, 13) for distributing the gaseous cooling fluid between the outer wall (3) of the vessel (2) and the inner wall (4a) of the element (4); and a system (19) for projecting the gaseous cooling fluid onto the outer wall (3) of the vessel (2). The application of the device to a steel-making converter is also claimed, where the element (4) forming a thermal screen is a girdle fixed to the outer wall (3) of the converter. USE/ADVANTAGE - The device is used for cooling the outer wall of a metallurgical vessel subjected to high temperatures, such as for example a steel converter. The device is easy to put into service, is efficient, reliable and has a low energy requirement whilst providing a high security for operating personnel. Since the device has a modular construction maintenance and repair are facilitated. The skin temperature can be kept at about 300 deg.C, thus improving the life of the converter.
