Roughly square shingles (28) are fixed on a roof frame (14) using battens (22) which are grooved (38) on the side facing down the roof, with topside sloping to provide bearing for the shingles. The topside of each shingle is housed in the slot in the batten above and fixed with nails and/or clips right through the groove & the shingle.
