Artificial blood substitutes - contg. albumin and artificial colloid, pref. of hydroxy ethyl starch

A plasma substitute comprises human albumin and at least one artificial colloid, the concentration of the artificial colloid(s) being at least equal, and preferably superior, to the albumin concentration, the albumin concentration is 10-30 g/litre, and the total colloid concentration, i.e. albumin + artificial colloids, being 40-60 g/litre. Pref. the artificial colloid is preferably a modified gelatine, a dextran, or a hydroxy ethyl starch, esp. one of 200 000 daltons. The albumin concentration is preferably 10-30 g/litre, and the artificial colloid conc. is 50-30 g/litre. USE/ADVANTAGE - Blood replacement during pre-operatory haemodilution to normalise circulating blood volume, or for vascular filling to compensate for blood loss. The new plasma substitute poses less risks than prior art plasma substitutes, even when large volumes are involved, and is more readily accessible.
