The hip joint prosthesis has a femoral shaft (100) with a surface formation promoting the flow of bone cement around it during implantation in the medullary canal of the femur. A lateral groove (111) is defined longitudinally along part of the length of the distal end portion (110) of the shaft. The surface formation may alternatively consist of lateral grooves formed longitudinally in both the front and back faces of the distal end of the shaft. ADVANTAGE - Improved homogeneity of cement insertion giving better implant strength.
