The desk has a casing (1) with lateral and longitudinal guideways (2,3) which support the transverse runners (4,5) of a sliding box (6) mounted within the casing. The box has a manual actuating handle (7) for movement in the 'X' direction of a coordinate system, and a stepwise control mechanism (9,10,12) for movement in the 'Y' direction. The stepwise control is actuated by pressure signals sensed by a pressure detector (13) contacted by a writing implement (18) moving on a sheet (23) which covers the upper surface of the box and detector. The detector may be either fixed to the box to move with it, or alternatively fixed to the casing to remain in a constant position.
