The silencer has an enclosure (20) with inlet and outlet connections. The compressor outlet is connected to the inlet of the silencer. The enclosure is divided into two chambers (24,26) by two moving walls (30,34), both of which have a passage (31,32) to allow flow through them. The walls are displaced by a stepper motor (50) that drives a shaft (40) that has screws (40-1,40-2) cut into it to displace each of the walls.
