The head senses a line (7) to be read on a document sheet (5). An objective (2) focusses light rays onto a photodetector slice (1), with the unit placed perpendicular to the paper. The light source (9) is offset from the perpendicular, and light rays feed into an optical coupler (11). The coupler feeds into three fibre optic cables (12-14), transmitting light to a hood (19) close to, and parallel to the paper surface. The light is emitted from the ends (16-18) of the cables, transmitting at the edges and centre of the hood. ADVANTAGE - Compensates for light scattering across objective.
