The processor determines images in real-time and establishes the semi-large axis (Ro), elliptically (Eo), and centre (Do) of an ellipse represented by a discrete distribution (100) of points. Pairs (r, e) of values are generated for the ellipticity and for each of the pairs generated in a calculator (8) of forming a circular distribution of points (110) through the application to each point of an homothety (H) defined through the centre (Q) fixed at the centre of the ellipse using an 'a priori' hypothesis that its axis is parallel to the small axis of the ellipse, its ratio is equal to the ellipticity value. A set of units (1, 2, 3) calculate through the ratio of the approximate centre (Q) the actual centre position and calculate the distance (Dk) which separates each point from the actual centre. USE - Earth sensor for space vehicle to determine terrestrial contours of Earth's disc and appts. to orientate space vehicle relative to Earth.
