P Passing the gas containing H2 S with a gas containing free oxygen, in a quantity suitable for providing an O2: H2 S molar ratio ranging from 0.5 to 3 and preferably 0.5 at 1.5, in contact with a catalyst for oxidizing H2 S to sulfur, by making said contact at temperatures below 200degree C. Said catalyst consists of an active carbon support in which a selected catalytic phase is incorporated among the oxide, salt or sulphide compounds of one or more transition metals taken from V, Mo, W, Ni and Co, the amount of said catalytic phase, expressed by weight of transition metal, representing 0.1% to 15 % of the weight of the calcined catalyst. /P
