The invention relates to a process for the preparation of alpha -monohalogenated haloglyoxalates and oxalates which consists in reacting an oxalic acid derivative chosen from oxalyl chloride, oxalyl bromide, chloroglyoxalates and bromoglyoxalates with an aldehyde in the presence of a catalyst. The invention also relates to the new unsymmetrical alpha -monochlorinated or alpha -monobrominated oxalates, the alpha -monochlorinated chloroglyoxalates and the alpha -monobrominated bromoglyoxalates obtained by this process.
