A method is provided for facilitating the introduction of a piercing rod (10) into a taphole (6) previously closed by a taphole clay. The rod (10) is gripped by a clamp (16) which imparts to it a powerful axial force and an oscillatory movement about its longitudinal axis. IMAGE
