17 beta -N-monosubstituted-carbamoyl-4-aza-5 alpha -androst- 1-en-3-ones of the fomula: IMAGE wherein the dotted line can represent a double bond when present, R1 is selected from hydrogen, methyl and ethyl, R2 is C(CH3)2CHO, Ra is methyl, R' is hydrogen or methyl, R" hydrogen or beta -methyl and R'" is hydrogen alpha -methyl or beta -methyl are described as being useful for the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy.
